Judith Akoth, a 39 year old lady from Siaya county will be graduating from KMTC with a diploma in Nursing. According to a post on the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Facebook page, the lady has overcome countless hurdles to make it to the finish line.
“I lost my dad at age 7 and then three years later at the age of 10, I lost my mum”, Akoth said.
She sat for and passed her KCPE exams with flying colors in 1998. In the year 2002, she sat for and aced her KCSE exams with grade B (minus). Her grandmother’s demise in 2002, caused her to settle for early marriage at the age of 18.
Her desire to further her studies was reignited in 2019 while at her sick aunt’s place. “Amid life’s hardships, a glimmer of hope emerged in 2019. I met a peasant farmer who saw a nurse in me”, said Judith.
In 2020, she dared to follow her dream of being a nurse. She applied and joined KMTC Siaya Campus in March of the same year. But life’s trials and tribulations were not done with her yet. She lost her loving hubby 2 months to the Final Qualifying Exams. “I got the news of the passing of my husband while on rural placement”, she said.
Despite all these pitfalls, the student stayed focused on her goal of becoming a nurse. She didn’t let the low moments define her. She overcame and is set to graduate with a diploma in Nursing from KMTC before the year ends. And she also had a message to anyone keen on furthering their studies but is concerned about their age.
“I stand here today as a testament to the strength of a determined heart. Age, I’ve learnt us merely a number. At 39, I earned my diploma, and my journey doesn’t end here,” said Judith Akoth, the soon-to-graduate KMTC student.
